Note from the Author:  Why I Wrote These 10 Quick-Read Books
While working closely with school districts and teachers in professional development, I was shocked to find out the turnover and attrition rate for teachers! District personnel would share how this affected them financially, and worse yet, how it impacted student achievement.  The research was even more discouraging—one-third of all teachers will leave the profession in their first three years and almost half of all teachers won’t celebrate their fifth anniversary of teaching (NAASP Bulletin 86, June 2002).   I continued to examine the research on how new teachers struggle, the steps for fostering teaching quality, and why new teachers leave or stay.

What’s the Answer?
One solution is to provide ongoing support* and specifically address the issues most challenging to those new to the teaching profession.  The ten books in The New Teacher Collection provide part of that support and were written to be practical, quick-reads—since time is an issue for everyone, but especially new teachers.

Each book addresses solutions for a new teacher concern and shares practical ideas for success.

Book 1 How to Survive and Thrive in Your First Year of Teaching
Book 2 Establishing Goals for You and Your Class
Book 3 The First Day of School
Book 4 Planning for Parental Involvement
Book 5 Designing a Classroom Blueprint
Book 6 Building a Class Team
Book 7 Planning for a Substitute
Book 8 Individualizing Instruction
Book 9 Becoming a Team Player at Your School
Book 10 Assessing Your Progress: Identifying Strengths and Areas of Needed Growth

To keep the support vibrant, up-to-date, and relative to teachers’ concerns, I have developed a website that works with these books, www.newteachernews.com. The website provides a forum for new teachers’ conversations, way for new teachers to get their questions answered quickly, and a collection of practical resources teachers can use right away. Articles are posted regularly and a blog features a new teacher’s thoughts as she makes her way through her first year of teaching. New Teacher Collection Toolbox, is specifically designed to enhance and extend the learning experiences of those who have purchased The New Teacher Collection.
